Point Wild, on Elephant Island, where Shackelton’s men survived for 4 months until they were rescued by the Chilean vessel Yelcho. A bust of Luis Pardo, the ship’s captain, was erected at the site where the remaining 22 members of Shackeltons’s crew had set up camp under the command of Frank Wild.

The red coloring of the snow surface comes from the green algae Chlamydomonas nivalis. The carotene produced by the algae protects them against strong UV radiation

The phenomenon is commonly known as blood or raspberry snow. Researchers have been studying intensively what the effects of this coloring on the climate are. The sun’s rays are less well reflected and the algae may even give off heat.

Die Rotfärbung der Schneeoberfläche stammt von der Grünalge Chlamydomonas nivalis. Das von der Alge produzierte Karotin schützt sie gegen starke UV-Strahlung

Das Phänomen ist gemeinhin als Blut- oder Himbeerschnee bekannt. Forscher studieren seit kurzem intensiv was die Auswirkungen dieser Färbung auf das Klima sind, da die Sonnenstrahlen weniger gut reflektiert werden und die Algen eventuell sogar Wärme abgeben.

Le phénomène est communément appelé neige de sang ou neige framboise. Les chercheurs ont récemment étudié intensivement les effets de cette coloration sur le climat. Les rayons du soleil sont moins bien réfléchis et les algues peuvent même dégager de la chaleur.

This fluke belongs to HW-MN 130 0574, now also known as « Eagle ».
The picture was taken north of Cuverville Island on January 21, 2020. « Eagle » was observed for the first time on January 22, 2017 and was travelling with a calf. Then her fluke was white without the golden patches, which are algae that settle temporary on the tail.

Diese Schwanzflosse gehört zu HW-MN 130 0574, jetzt auch als « Eagle » bekannt.
Das Bild wurde am 21. Januar 2020 nördlich von Cuverville Island aufgenommen. « Eagle » wurde am 22. Januar 2017 zum ersten Mal beobachtet und war mit einem Kalb unterwegs. Damals war die Fluke weiß, ohne die goldenen Flecken. Hier handelt es sich um harmlose Algen, die den Schwanz vorübergehend besiedeln.
